Certified Professional Résumé Writer

In short, the CPRW credential is the global Industry Standard for professional résumé writers.

Prior to 1990, there was no “standard” by which a résumé writer could be judged. Highly experienced résumé professionals had no way to distinguish their expertise from those who were less gifted and experienced. To the buying public - the résumé client - one résumé service was pretty much the same as any other.

During the first year of CPRW, the Association developed a standard for testing résumé writers and awarding the Certified Professional Résumé Writer (CPRW) credential to those meeting the standard.

Not only does the general public now have a means of selecting the industry's best résumé professionals, but others in the career field have taken notice. Publishers of career books request that résumé samples be submitted exclusively by those with the CPRW credential, including individual practitioners, universities, military career counselors, and state Departments of Labor, etc.

The harsh reality is that Company X would rather not read your résumé. In fact, recruiters are doing everything in their power to get rid of your résumé as fast as humanly possible. Their immediate goal is to eliminate you from further consideration in the placement process. Don't get disheartened. The idea here is that résumés are the first step hiring managers use to screen OUT candidates. So, an effective résumé is one that does NOT screen you out.  Your résumé is your chance to display your qualifications, skills, and ambitions. It is a record of your goals and successes, and a way of communicating your capabilities to a potential employer. The higher the job level, or the more complex the person’s experience, the more time and expertise required to custom-create an EFFECTIVE résumé. That's where we come in. We are here to help you survive the screening, and we provide exceptional service, tremendous value, and a personal touch to every client's project.

Résumé writing is a labor-intensive process for a marketing tool that is mission-critical to your job search; and like most things in life, you usually get what you pay for. We encourage you to educate yourself on the many résumé services available to you. Be aware, however, of "résumé mills." Résumé mills use cookie-cutter templates and boilerplate text, likely employ confidential writers from job boards and fabricate information to turn your project around at a speed which cannot possibly provide the sharpest vision of their clients. Avoid them for the sake of your career and sanity.

TAX BENEFITS FOR JOB SEEKERS

For more information about job search expenses, see IRS Publication 529, Miscellaneous Deductions. This publication is available on the IRS Web site, IRS.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Here are the top six things the IRS wants you to know about deducting costs related to your job search:

  1. Any job search expenses you deduct must be spent on a job search in your current occupation. You may not deduct expenses incurred while looking for a job in a new occupation.
  2. You can deduct employment and outplacement agency fees you pay while looking for a job in your present occupation. If your employer pays you back in a later year for employment agency fees, you must include the amount you receive in your gross income up to the amount of your tax benefit in the earlier year.
  3. You can deduct amounts you spend for preparing and mailing copies of a résumé to prospective employers as long as you are looking for a new job in your present occupation.
  4. If you travel to an area to look for a new job in your present occupation, you may be able to deduct travel expenses to and from the area. You can only deduct the travel expenses if the trip is primarily to look for a new job. The amount of time you spend on personal activity compared to the amount of time you spend looking for work is important in determining whether the trip is primarily personal or is primarily to look for a new job.
  5. You cannot deduct job search expenses if there was a substantial break between the end of your last job and the time you begin looking for a new one.
  6. You cannot deduct job search expenses if you are looking for a job for the first time.
